Artist: DJ / producer Beatnick
Sound: When Beatnick steps to the stage, don't be surprised if you hear an old Hall & Oates track thrown in with something newer by Mayer hawthorne. Seriously, this dude's got Serato-induced multiple-personality disorder. Depending on where he is and what the crowd wants, he'll play anything from house and electro to hip-hop, soul and reggae. His one rule, though, is to play a few songs that are undiscovered by the mainstream.
“That's our job—to introduce new music to people,” he says. “Not too many of us DJs follow that anymore.”
Stats: Beatnick's been DJing for more than a decade, and he's got the promotional powerhouse Sleeping Giant Music representing him, so his schedule is pretty full. Most Fridays you can find him at The Office in North Park, spinning dance music mixed with '80s, soul and disco. Saturdays he's at Bar Dynamite, playing hip-hop and dancehall (aside from one Saturday a month when he's at F6ix for a hip-hop set), and one Thursday every month he's at The Ivy @ The Andaz Hotel. Once a month, you can find him at Searsucker and Burlap, where he spins mellower, loungy sets. He also produces a monthly music podcast with Sleeping Giant Music that you can subscribe to at giantsarise.com.
Coming up: Next week, Beatnick will drop a new mixtape, Fresh Cargo, a blend of rap and dubstep with a bit of reggae. The mixtape is a collaboration with the Mission Gorge boutique The Fresh Yard, and Beatnick will give out copies of the CD at the release party at 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at El Dorado. DJ Artistic, Domi Young and others will perform.
