The wrestling matches at Skybox Sports Grill are epic

Maybe you've caught wind of the occasional wrestling matches going down at Skybox Sports Grill in Clairemont (4809 Clairemont Drive). Perhaps you giggled while imagining old, fat dudes in spandex rolling around in a rinky-dink, makeshift wresting ring.

Erase that pathetic scenario from your brain.

Move over WWE, because the folks at American Wrestling Alliance are not fucking around. Well, they are, in the sense that the fighting is somewhat fake, but AWA puts on a kick-ass, well-produced event, complete with a lineup of entertaining costumed characters, back-storied managers, announcers and a raucous audience that boos and chants. And, yes, people get hit with chairs.

Announcer Jon Allen kept things moving last Saturday as a boozed-up audience surrounded the ring.

"From the Flower Fields of Carlsbad, at 200 pounds, heeeere's the Iron Butterfly," Allen said as a chubby man in a winged neon outfit pounced from backstage.

Iron Butterfly was the good guy that night, taking on a Polish villain. The match was preceded and followed by other good-versus-evil matchups that had the crowd jeering at the ref and calling out for specific moves, like the "619 from Behind" (or something like that), an impressive swing maneuver by Iron Butterfly.

A table of Larry David lookalikes enjoyed a front-row view. One of them told me I had to stick around to see Vixen, a gal he described as "the best wrestler I've ever seen." A buxom wrestler from Long Beach, Vixen took on AWA world heavyweight champ SoCal Crazy in a match that was as comical as it was painful-looking.

"He kicked her in the chee chees, man," said one shocked patron.

The whole thing ended with a massive Battle Royale that zeroed in on beating the crap out of Allen, who, after getting a chair to the back, admitted to his co-host that some of this stuff actually hurts.

AMA will return to San Diego on June 15 at Four Points Sheraton Hotel. Details at awalegends.com.
