PLAN A: 2:54, Widowspeak @ The Casbah. Putting a fresh spin on a well-trodden sound, London rockers 2:54 take inspiration from 90s bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine to deliver smoldering, deeply passionate indie-rock. Its been done a million times before, of course, but its still quite good. PLAN B: Lisa Marie Presley, Terraplane Sun @ Belly Up. Elvis Presley progeny Lisa Marie Presley usually strikes the stance of a hardened pop-rocker, but she goes full-folk on her new album, Storm & Grace. Its a wise choice, offering a nice balance between toughness and grace. BACKUP PLAN: Northern Tigers, Jeans Wilder, Shiva Trash, Mohammed Qiang, DJ Gonzo @ Tin Can Ale House.
Thursday, June 28
PLAN A: Whitehorse, Sodomia, Looming @ Shakedown Bar. The final installment of the noise-obsessed June Gloom series is a real doozy. While Melbourne, Australia, doom-metalers Whitehorse churn out cruelly slow riffs and hellish howls, Sodomia combines evil black-metal vibes with eerie noise. PLAN B: Devfits, Little White Teeth, Finn Riggins, The Boyish Charms @ Tin Can Ale House. You have to see Rob Crows Devits at least once in your life— the Devo / Misfits mashup project is totally weird in the most amusing way. But dont miss Boise, Idahos Finn Riggins, whose quirky, keyboard-topped indie-rock is relentlessly fun. BACKUP PLAN: Toki Wright, Burnell Washburn, Parker & The Numberman @ Kava Lounge.
Friday, June 29
PLAN A1: K-Holes, Teenage Burritos @ Bar Pink. New York Citys no-wave movement mightve fizzled out long ago, but you can hear it in K-Holes. As I wrote about last week, the Brooklyn band channels all the grit and grime of the city with sneering vocals, howling sax and pummeling rhythms. PLAN A2: Smile Now Cry Later, Rafter, Lion Cut DJ @ Whistle Stop. Local pop diva Smile Now Cry Later is about to release her awesome new album, so you can bet your booty that she and hubby Rafter will go all-out at this CD-release party. PLAN B: Ab-Soul, Black Resume, Cali Cam, Highfii Kiddo, Tha Element @ Porters Pub. A member of L.A.s Black Hippy hip-hop alongside cohort Kendrick Lamar, rapper Ab-Souls cockiness knows no bounds (Im a fucking genius / gripping my fucking penis) but he has the skills and insight to back it up. BACKUP PLAN: The Soft Pack, Heavy Hawaii @ Belly Up.
Saturday, June 30
PLAN A: The Nervous Wreckords, Maren Parusel, Hills Like Elephants, Black Hondo @ The Casbah. You wont find any obscure sounds here (thats what Plan B is for). The Nervous Wreckords and Maren Parusel have both released new albums—Let Them All Talk and Tightrope Walker, respectively—and theyre full of straight-up, radioready pop. PLAN B: The Array Duo, Dead Animal Mod, Religious Girls, Vaginals, Rapid Youth @ Tin Can Ale House. The inventor of a popular series of instruments and MIDI controllers based on a unique system of note arrangements, The Array Duos Bill Wesley is as brilliant as he is eccentric. With their interest in mind-expanding sonics, the duos performance tonight is bound to be surprising. BACKUP PLAN: Johnny Osbourne @ World Beat Center.
Sunday, July 1
PLAN A: Hyena, The Frail, Cheyenne Giles, Mike Delgado @ El Dorado. Hyena have electro-pop on lockdown. After delivering a slew of dancefloor bangers on 2010s We See You, the local duo just released an EP thats sweeter, slower and so much sexier. Check out our review on Page 27. BACKUP PLAN: Bromigofest w/ Infinity Dots, Balloons, Orgasmatron, Religious Girls, Baby Buffalo, L.W.D.S., Array Light Show, DJ Li Fu @ Ché Café.
Monday, July 2
PLAN A: Beata Bermuda, Ezza Rose, Montalban Quintet @ Tin Can Ale House. With their violins and three-part harmonies, Swedish folk trio Beata Bermuda take you on a romp through green pastures and snowy mountain-scapes. Dont miss locals Montalban Quintet, who sound like Ennio Morricone with an indie-rock twist. BACK- UP PLAN: The Rich Hands, Better Best, Real Things Are Good @ Soda Bar.
Tuesday, July 3
PLAN A: Hot Club of Cowtown, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash @ The Griffin. Emiting the fiddle-playin, standup-basspluckin sound of classic western swing and hot jazz, Hot Club of Cowtown are all about having an old-fashioned good time. BACKUP PLAN: Blackout Party, Barrio Tiger, Deadly Birds, Stephen Rey & The Sex Trash @ The Casbah.
