One of the biggest is Three Nights During the Con, a three-day comedy / film / concert series put on by Impose Magazine—with the help of Wormwood Films and Art Fag Recordings—that goes down at The Casbah from Thursday, July 12, through Saturday, July 14. However, we highlight most of those shows in If I Were U on Page 36, so read on for other stuff.
At 4th & B on Friday, July 13, Andrew W.K. will get fists pumping at a party put on by Spin and iHeartComix, as he performs his album I Get Wet all the way through. Folks will party that much harder thanks to Peanut Butter Wolf, founder of Stones Throw Records, whose big-screen VJ sets include playful video remixes.
Also on Friday, Adult Swim will take over the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier to host a performance by Dethklok, a cartoon death-metal band from the show Metalocalypse. But that show is sold out, so make your way instead to the Shakedown Bar. In a party put on by Gore Noir magazine and hosted by bloodthirsty babes The Vamp Girls, hardcore punks Vampirates will commemorate Friday the 13th with their raucous, barroom brawl of a live show.
At The Ruby Room on Saturday, July 14, a special installment of Nerdcore Night—a monthly showcase dedicated to a nerd-themed hip-hop subgenre—will feature the father of Nerdcore himself, MC Frontalot. For an incredibly nerdy white-boy rapper, Frontalot has solid flow as he dishes out quirky, tongue-in-cheek rhymes. Hell play with fellow rapper MC Lars, burlesque crew Devils Playground Burlesque and other nerds.
Also on Saturday, at Kitty Diamond (formerly The Flame), Club Sabbat goth night DJs Robin Roth, Liquid Grey and Diskdroid will spin a mix of industrial, darkwave and synth-pop as dancers go head-to-head dressed as cute Hello Kitty characters and feline ThunderCats heroes. You can wear whatever costume you like to compete in a contest with cash prizes.
What Comic-Con jamboree wouldnt be complete without an appearance by The Aquabats? In addition to speaking in a panel talk on Friday about their TV series, The Aquabats! Super Show!, the goofy rock superheroes will get plenty zany onstage at House of Blues on Saturday. And with that, all will be well in nerd-land.
