Indie-rockers Pinback are getting ready to release a new album: Information Retrieved comes out via Temporary Residence Ltd. on Oct. 16. It's their first album in five years, following up on 2007's Autumn of the Seraphs. Of course, co-founders Zach Smith and Rob Crow have been busy with other projects: Crow released a solo album last year, He Thinks He's People, that's been nominated for Album of the Year in the upcoming San Diego Music Awards. Smith's other band, Three Mile Pilot, recently released a new EP, Maps.

Keep an eye out for a new garage-rock band, Gorgeous George & The Draggs. Taking its name from a famous professional wrestler from the '50s, and also the Ty Segall song "The Drag," the local quartet throws down scummy riffs in the style of MC5 and The Stooges. "A lot of the songs are just about shit we all love," says frontman Brett Reeves: "Partying, women, monster movies and just having a blast with life." You can listen here.

Public Enemy's Chuck D has been added as a keynote speaker to this year's San Diego Music Thing, the festival and conference taking place in the North Park area on Sept. 14 and 15. Speakers at the fest also include MC5 co-founder Wayne Kramer and Martin Atkins of Public Image Ltd. and Killing Joke.Head to for details.

Ship Records, a new local label, will celebrate the release of its debut compilation album, Against the Current Vol. 1, at Til-Two Club on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Co-founder Lety McKenzie says the comp includes tracks by local bands like Nick Bone and The Big Scene and Shake Before Us, along with out-of-town bands like JJCnV. Schitzophonics, Gloomsday and The Batbombs will perform at the free show, and the first 50 people who show up will get a free CD.

Country-rockers Katie Leigh and the Infantry will celebrate the release of their new EP, Drunk in Georgia, at Tin Can Ale House on Thursday, Aug. 2. Calico Kids and New Orleans' My Graveyard Jaw will also play.
