For centuries, men and women have battled over issues: voting rights, reproductive rights, which movie to rent at Redbox. Things got really heated once the nightclub was invented. They also got sloppier and more ridiculous. Go to any bar in Pacific Beach at 2 a.m. on any night and hear the assault of f-bombs as girlfriends dump their boyfriends while barefoot and flirting with hepatitis.
On Saturday, Aug. 4, the sexes will attempt to play nice at Boys & Girls, DJ Adam Salters night of indie electro and house music at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge (1030 Broadway, Downtown). The nights special guest is producer and DJ Perseus, who refers to himself as a baby-making record maker, thanks to his chilled, beat-driven mixes featuring samples of R&B and hip-hop classics. Pack your Plan B emergency contraceptive, ladies. The cover is $7, but if you arrive before 10:30 p.m., its free.
While playing nice is fine and dandy, its not necessarily entertaining. Why do you think Rock of Love was such an awesomely bad piece of reality TV? Every night, I light a candle to the Virgin Mary, asking her to bring that show back. Since La Virgen seems to be ignoring my pleas, you can head out to the trashy reality-TV set known as Pacific Beach from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, for Bubble Disco. Professional party man Ikah Love and John Dadon will spin disco, funk and house music to the spray-tanned masses at Firehouse (722 Grand Ave.). While it may not get nasty, Im sure that at least one person will fall down the stairs. Thats good enough.
After all that excitement, cool down at La Puerta (560 Fourth Ave., Downtown) for their Sunday happy hour. All drinks are half off, and Junior the Disco Punk will be spinning the background sounds. Its the perfect environment to get back together with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or maybe find a new one.
