A semi-regular feature in which we ask local musicians what they've been listening to lately.
DJ PWC: "I've been listening to Crimekillz constantly for the last couple years. I love the realness they embody. My jam right now is Born Alone Die Alone,' 'cause it's the raw truth."
Zoltron Monsieur, Lion Cut: "Lion Cut has been really diggin' on local band (Charles) Book&Record's songs and videos. As cats from space, sci-fi surrealist jams are our cup of tea."
Astra Kelly: "I recently started a Johann Sebastian Bach Pandora station and have been listening to that incessantly. It stimulates my brain in all the right places."
Jackson Milgaten, Cuckoo Chaos: "I have been obsessed with a guy from Montreal by the name of Mac DeMarco. He and his band play their own brand of off-kilter garage-pop full of catchy hooks and jangly, shimmering guitar licks. His charmingly quirky lyrics are delivered in a laid-back talk/sing style that reminds me of Lou Reed a little bit."
Jordan Leal, Rebuilder: "I've been listening to Yowie's new album [Damning with Faint Praise] quite a lot recently. Strange music always intrigues me, and this band is no exception to that. Their music sounds improvised at first, but everything these guys do is on point. Once you give the album multiple listens, you can pinpoint all the different melodies they go through in a single song."
Nena Anderson: "I've been listening to Gregg Allman's Low Country Blues. I opened for his show here at the Balboa [Theatre], and I wanted to get a feel for his new material. It's a beautiful record of blues songs, produced by T Bone Burnett. His voice is amazing, and the entire album grooves, swings and shows off his skills on the organ. So good."
Brian Karscig, The Nervous Wreckords: "I still listen to a lot of old vinyl. A lot of Freddy King, Leon Russell and Appetite for Destruction has been finding its way to the turntable a lot after a few cocktails."
Brad Lee, Stereo Disguise Recording Laboratories: "Barbarian, man. Watch out for that shit."
