We’d like to plant a few reminders in your brains about Proposition D—the measure that will increase the sales tax in San Diego by half a cent for the next five years:

Remember that the two politicians leading the charge against Prop. D, City Councilmembers Carl DeMaio and Kevin Faulconer—want to be mayor of San Diego, and remember that hollering about the government taking your money is the easiest way to pander for votes. Also remember that DeMaio has long been an advocate for shrinking government down to the size where it can easily be drowned in the bathtub. For him, this is a religious crusade.

Remember that we truly believe that the looming budget deficit—caused by a combination of corruption and the recession—is so large that there isn’t nearly enough budgetary fat left to avoid painful cuts to essential services. And remember that no reputable observer has concluded that DeMaio and Faulconer have a feasible plan to balance next year’s budget.

Remember that Prop. D would result in a mere 20 cents being added to a $40 bill. But also remember that next July, the state sales tax will decrease by 1 cent, meaning that even if Prop. D passes, the tax in San Diego will be a half-cent lower than it is now.

We hope our clip-out guide is useful.

Remember to vote on Nov.2.
