The fetish-inspired design of Boudoir

When Mike Viscuso (owner of On Broadway, Deco’s, Red Circle, etc.) came to designer Davis Krumins with his newest nightclub venture, he said he wanted a place that brought sexual fetishes out of dungeons and darkened bedrooms.

“So, these are our vibrator chandeliers,” Krumins says, giving a quick tour of the new three-level club, Boudoir (701 C St., Downtown), a sexed-up, completely redone replacement of the Asian-themed restaurant/nightclub Jade Theater.

Nary a bamboo shoot can be seen in the shiny new LED-light-laden creation. Krumins, who, with his wife Andrea, runs the interior-design biz Davis Ink, says the biggest challenge was keeping the club from looking “old-manish and creepy.”

“It’s sort of an odd combination of very sexy and sophisticated and rough,” says Krumins, whose work San Diegans might know from Fluxx. “I think the idea is that we wanted to create a space that, when girls come here, they feel really comfortable and the sexuality comes out in a good way.”

Take the so-called “Dirty Library,” for example, Krumins says, entering a small, den-like room with oversized vinyl and fuzzy furniture, book shelves, animal-skin rugs and a big, fake, white ox head serving as the centerpiece. Books like Bill Clinton’s autobiography, My Life, and Benjamin Kunkel’s Indecision fill the shelves, as do a few knickknacks from Viscuso’s personal collection.

“It looks kind of cool because it does look like a man’s library,” Krumins says of the owner’s stuff.

The main attraction, of course, will be the girls dressed up in fetish gear who’ll prance and prowl through the club, dance on its many stages and otherwise entertain the clientele. But if, by chance, a lady isn’t in sight, the design details will entertain you. Leather whips are stretched across the giant, street-level windows.

“These still need to be tightened,” Krumins says, pulling at a whip.

Handcuffs and other bondage-type gear are used in other ways around Boudoir, but nothing is too shocking until you get to the VIP level. Krumins walks upstairs and smiles when he shows off the enclosed room that boasts life-sized Plexiglas cutouts of people in compromising positions inside the walls.

“You can see the silhouettes really well when the lights are on,” he says.

He giggles when he gets to the back room. It’s home to a giant dominatrix wheel, which people can get strapped to, spun around and spanked.

“To my understanding,” Krumins says, “people really dig this.”
