Rhythm & Vine—a music, wine, beer and food festival benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego—will take place at North County Fair mall in Escondido from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 9. Tickets are $75 in advance and $100 at the door. rhythmandvine.org

Freebirds, a Texas-based, flame-broiler-like chain and Chipotle competitor, is slated to open its first San Diego location in July at 3958 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest. Construction has not yet commenced; I’ll keep you posted on details. The meat’s hormone-free and stuff. freebirds.com

Cups La Jolla (7857 Girard Ave.), the beacon of all that is organic in cupcake form, will offer “The Perfect Picnic” from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, the first in a series of themed hands-on culinary classes taught by professional chefs, mixologists and restaurateurs. Eco-conscious chef Chad White of EGO Culinary Trends will teach guests how to prepare a series of tasty picnic-style foods, and Ian Ward and Lucien Connor of Snake Oil Cocktail Co. will provide mixology tips. Great American Chefs Tour comes to a boob tube near you this fall, hosted by your favorite Cooking Guy, Sam Zien, and featuring four chefs from each touring region. It commences with San Diego’s Matt Gordon of Urban Solace; Isabel Cruz of Isabel’s Cantina, Barrio Star and Coffee Cup; Anthony Sinsay of Harney Sushi; and Will Gustwiller of Eclipse Chocolat. Filming happens at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at House of Blues San Diego. A ticket ($50 to $100) gets you a spot in the studio audience, food and drinks.
