Lesands becomes an L.A.-based solo project, Eric Howarth starts up at Porter's Pub and more local music news

Lesands has gone through some major changes during the past month. The indie-pop act used to be a trio, but now it's simply the solo project of frontman Austin Taylor Tirado. “I need to be the one that's recording all the parts and having the vision stay pretty close,” he tells CityBeat. “I can't really deal with having to have someone come in and change a lot of parts.” Drummer Joel Plotnik says he quit the band at South by Southwest when it became clear that Tirado felt entitled to complete creative control; bassist Nik Ewing says he was fired shortly thereafter. Tirado now lives in Los Angeles, where he's been working on a full-length album in a makeshift home studio and using hired hands and recruiting friends for live performances. Plotnik has been playing with friends lately and might go on tour with SOLOBOB, the solo project of Rooney's Robert Schwartzman. Ewing is still playing in The Howls, plans to record a record with Longstay and will go on tour with Tape Deck Mountain in June.

After a year of booking monthly Thursday night shows at Fluxx, the swanky Downtown nightclub, Hi-Speed Soul Records owner Eric Howarth has decided to move on. “I just kind of felt like it was probably time for me to create a little more time in my own schedule because I'm super-busy running a label,” he says, emphasizing that he still maintains good relations with Fluxx's owners. But he isn't done booking shows: He'll be working with Porter's Pub, a 500-capacity venue at UCSD. “It was awesome doing those shows [at Fluxx], but I think it'll also be cool to do some smaller shows at Porter's,” he says, noting that he'll be able to book shows on weekends, when Fluxx has DJ nights. Pop singer Kristeen Young will perform at Porter's Pub on Saturday, May 7. Republic of Letters and Joanie Mendenhall will open and FM 94/9's Tim Pyles will host.

The Tremmors will spin tunes at “Music is My Medicine,” a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization, at Onyx Room on Saturday, May 7. There will be a raffle and complimentary drinks with a donation. Digitalife, Mr. Nice Guy, Flo, Stir Crazy and EDN will also DJ.
