Jim Ruland, author of CityBeat's Floating Library book column, racked up 1,191 votes in the "Your Life... The Reader's Digest Version" short-story contest, bringing home the grand prize.

His story, "Homeward Bound," which was featured in the contest as an official editor's pick, will be published in the magazine and he'll be awarded a $25,000 cash prize.

Here's a little taste from Ruland's story:

When I was in the Navy, I drank like a sailor. When I got out of the Navy, I drank like a sailor. You could say I went overboard (Click here to read the remaining 120 words).

Ruland is currently working on a memoir, tentatively titled Overboard, about his days as a sailor. He also occasionally teaches flash-fiction and micro-memoir writing classes at San Diego Writers, Ink
