If you've never had a Tijuana street taco, then you've never really had a taco. We're talking the ones made at modest stands that usually consist of only a bar where you place your order and a giant grill on which various meats are cooked. A warm tortilla, filling and a dollop of wonderful sauce = perfection. On Saturday, Aug. 18, from noon to 6 p.m., Turista Libre-your guide to all things awesome in Tijuana-is organizing a Tijuana Taco Tour. Your $45 ticket includes round-trip transportation from, and back to, the border (the group meets at the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing near the UETA Duty Free store), delish tacos from four taquerias and a flight of beer from the new Baja Craft Beer Tasting Room. So, maybe Julia Child didn't treat Julie Powell so nice, but she was still a rocking chef. To mark her 100th birthday, on Wednesday, Aug. 15, The Red Door Restaurant & Wine Bar in Mission Hills holds its Chef's Market Dinner in honor of Childs. Pre-meal, take a tour of the Mission Hills Farmers Market with Chef Amy Finley. Then, head back to the restaurant for a French-inspired four-course meal prepared by Chef Miguel Valdez and his team. On Thursday, Aug. 9, from 4:30 to 11 p.m., Hillcrest's Local Habit is teaming up with the cool kids over at LOVELIKEBEER and O.C.'s The Bruery for a Creole-themed, beer-paired vegan dinner they're calling "Les Bon Temps." Oenophiles will want to check out the second-annual San Diego Wine Country Festival happening at Bernardo Winery in Rancho Bernardo from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. More than 20 local wineries will be pouring their latest, plus there will be food booths and educational booths among the winery's lovely olive-tree-filled grounds. Tickets are $25 online, $30 at the door and get you 10 tastes, a commemorative glass and a baguette and oil and vinegar for dipping. and can be purchased for $30 at the door on the day of the festival.
