Yeah, iPods suck.

Digable film

The image of John Cusack holding up a boom box playing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" at Ione Sky's window is one that's ingrained in every '80s-teen-movie fan's brain. It's the kind of romantic gesture that women dream of and men can never live up to. But maybe you can make up for your lack of romancing skills by taking your special someone to see the movie that made that scene famous, Say Anything, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at ArcLight Cinemas (4425 La Jolla Village Drive in La Jolla). Or, catch it at the Pearl Hotel (1410 Rosecrans in Point Loma) at 8 p.m., also on Feb. 13. The Cameron Crowe-directed flick is exactly the kind of thing to get you warmed up for Valentine's Day. It's sweet and funny and might actually teach you a thing or two about wooing a lady.

Digable tunes

Raised on the beaches of Del Mar, local jazz guitarist and composer Peter Sprague has a lithe, shaggy-haired style: Using a trademark, double-necked guitar, he's been known to pluck out breezy smooth-jazz with a touch of Latin flavor. He's honed his skills during decades' worth of wood-shedding, playing with folks like Chick Corea and Charlie Haden. Recently, he put together a new group called Bop Moderno. Featuring his bro Tripp on sax and flute and local heavy-hitter Gilbert Castellanos tooting the trumpet, the quintet takes on Sprague's original bop tunes, putting the two horns center stage while bassist Gunnar Biggs and drummer Duncan Moore hold down the groove. They'll play at the Museum of Making Music (5790 Armada Drive in Carlsbad) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. $20 for members; $25 everyone else.

Digable architecture

West Coast modern architecture has a distinct style: simple structures, made mostly of wood, with lots of windows to the point that it can be tough to tell where the house ends and nature begins. The film Coast Modern captures the best examples of these kinds of classic structures, from Frank Lloyd Wright's Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding, Calif. (his last project), to the Eames Case Study House #8 in L.A. (shown left). Get schooled in the genre's history and aesthetics at a special screening of the documentary at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the La Paloma Theatre (471 South Coast Hwy. 101 in Encinitas). Tickets are $10 and the event's hosted by Modern San Diego, the go-to website for anything you ever want to know about local mid-century design and architecure.
