LA Weekly reports that William Bensussen, AKA hip-hop producer The Gaslamp Killer, is recovering after a life-threatening scooter accident in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles last week.
In a Q&A with Jeff Weiss in his "Bizarre Ride" column, Bensussen-who's originally from San Diego-explains that he was riding downhill on his scooter when he took one hand off of his handlebars to catch his hat and squeezed his brakes with the other hand. However, he was only squeezing the front brakes, and the scooter ended up flipping over and landing on top of him.
Despite the intensity of the accident, and the pain, Bensussen says in the interview that he wasn't aware of the seriousness of the injuries.
"My elbows and my knees were bloody, but my face was fine," Bensussen tells LA Weekly. "My head was fine, my neck and my back too. But I felt my left shoulder was dislocated, I didn't know what the fuck was going on."
After the accident, Bensussen was taken to USC Medical Center, where he was treated for internal bleeding, had a dozen staples put in his chest and had his spleen removed.
Bensussen has been out of the hospital for three days, but he has a long path to recovery ahead of him. He's still unable to walk or eat solid foods and, as a result of the removal of his spleen, can no longer drink alcohol.
"I don't have anything against partying," Bensussen says. "It's fun. I get it. It's just not an option anymore."
Despite the accident, Gaslamp Killer still plans to get back to work on new music after he recovers.
