Digable cooking

Picked up a copy of Sunset magazine lately? It's not your parents' Sunset. The publication's been around, like, forever, but several years ago made a serious (and successful) effort to appeal to the cool crowd. Sunset's new cookbook, The Great Outdoors, is just what you'd expect-lovely photos and an eclectic selection of recipes for a range of outdoor cooks (grilled French toast kebabs? Yes, please). On Saturday, Aug. 23, head to Chino Farm (6123 Calzada Del Bosque, Rancho Santa Fe) for Summer BBQ Fest, part of the ongoing Good Earth, Great Chefs series of events. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., check out outdoor-cooking demos (solar, charcoal and wood-burning) featuring the cookbook's recipes, food tastings and a chance to shop the farm's amazing produce and pantry items.---

Digable eats

foodtruckfridaysLooking to cram in some outdoor-dining time before summer's over? Cruise over to Silo in Makers Quarter (753 15th St., East Village) for the second-to-last Food Truck Fridays of the summer. There will be a solid assemblage of music, craft beer and cocktails, as well as both food and fashion trucks. From 4:30 p.m. to sunset Friday, Aug. 22, truck nuts can shop for vintage apparel from the likes of Stop, Shop & Roll, Steps to Steelo, ZB Savory and Cali Chique. Then eat some gourmet grub by Frida's Cocina, Stuffed and Simply Fresh and wash it down with cocktails featuring Henebery Whiskey or craft brews from St. Archer. All the while, The Midnight Pine-whose first full-length record, Awake Now, took home best local recording at the 2013 San Diego Music Awards-will play a set or two. This 21-and-over event is free.

Digable wine

uncorkedSan Diego's become synonymous with beer-so much so that local wines tend to get overlooked amid all the hops, grains and yeast. But we're also within driving distance of dozens of wineries just over the county line in Temecula. Those wines are being featured in Uncorked, happening at Westfield UTC in La Jolla (4545 La Jolla Drive) from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. Attendees can try a variety of Temecula wines via a"wine walk" to four different wine gardens and sample eats from spots like Seasons 52, Pirch and Tender Greens. There'll also be live music by Whitney Shay & Robin Henkel, The Stateside Islander Crew and other acts and-best of all-proceeds benefit the San Diego Museum of Art. Tickets are $30 advance, $40 at the door and. 21+.

Digable art

museumMuseums often take themselves too seriously. That's why the Nationwide Museum Mascot Project, founded by husband-and-wife team Brian Dick and Christen Sperry-Garcia, is such a clever initiative. Invited or not, the artists show up at museums across the globe and, dressed in handmade costumes made from locally sourced thrift-store stuff, they hype up museum attendees as well as folks just walking by. Find out more about the improvised intervention when Dick, a former CityBeat cover artist, and Sperry-Garcia stop by Disclosed unLocation Gallery (1925 30th St., South Park) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. They'll discuss their current"La-La Tour" that's taken them to spots like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte de Lima in Peru. There will also be a display of their mascot costumes and related swag.
