MOXIE Theatre's The Butcher of Baraboo heads this week's rundown of local plays
It’s ironic that The Butcher of Baraboo, MOXIE Theatre’s final production this season, features two directors (Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and Chelsea Whitmore). The scattershot dark comedy, which centers on Valerie, a cleaver-wielding mom with some serious family issues, already suffers from a bad case of piling on amid Marisa Wegrzyn’s ingratiating dialogue and the directors’ too-fleeting bits of business (not to mention the misconceived role of junior pharmacist Midge). But the always very good DeAnna Driscoll is funny as Val’s sister-in-law Gail, a meth-friendly cop who bungles her way around the family’s pithy secrets. And dig the attention to detail in Amy Chini and Esther Emery’s set design!
