Sure, Charlie Sheen is an easy, slow-moving target, but when comedian Jeffrey Ross roasted him on Comedy Central, the jokes were so harsh and hilarious that even Sheen seemed to snap out of his crazed daze and crack a fake smile. At 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, Ross, who's on a countrywide tour, makes a stop in San Diego at House of Blues (1055 Fifth Ave., Downtown) in an effort to make you giggle and, of course, plug his DVD, book and upcoming film, The Comedian, which he co-wrote with producer Art Linson. $25-$35. livenation.com
The Arturo O'Farrill Afro-Latin Septet brings its gorgeous, energy-infused music to Birch North Park Theatre (2891 University Ave.) at 8 p.m. Friday, January 27, kicking off the La Jolla Music Society's 2012 Latin Jazz Series. O'Farrill is the 2009 winner of the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album, and the son of legendary composer Chico O'Farrill. Claudia Russell, of KSDS Jazz 88.3, will interview the award-winning musician in a pre-concert chat starting at 7 p.m. $35-$65. LJMS.org
Had enough of the craft-cocktail craze yet? No? Neither have we. A good craft-cocktail spot not only makes excellent cocktails, but serves them up in a setting befitting the whole take-it-slow ethos of cocktail culture. For a good example of this pairing, check out The Lion's Share (629 Kettner Blvd. in Little Italy). Sure, the cocktails are $11 ($3 off during happy hour, Monday through Friday, 4 to 6 p.m.) but they include offerings like a cucumber gimlet made with Hendricks Gin and "Monks Gone Wild" (strawberry-infused Pimms, Green Chartreuse, lemon and ginger beer). There's also a menu of cocktail-friendly small bites (like a sausage sampler, oysters and potato puffs) and elegant entrees (wild boar ribs, pan-seared quail) to help soak up the booze.
