"Screen on the Green" Beginning July 8, enjoy eight straight Thursdays of free flicks on San Diego Museum of Art's east lawn in Balboa Park. The film series is presented in conjunction with the museum's American Beauty exhibition, and galleries are open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Films begin when the sun goes down. Movies Before the Mast From 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in July and August, the San Diego Maritime Museum presents "Movies Before the Mast," where films are projected onto a special sail hoisted on the Star of India (located at the intersection of Broadway and North Harbor Drive). Fridays are "date nights"-meaning no kids allowed and alcohol's available. The film in July is The Caine Mutiny starring Humphrey Bogart; in August, Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. Saturdays are "family nights" when parent-accompanied kids can tour the ship beforehand and then settle down to watch Sinbad: Legend of Seven Seas (July) and Claymation Jason and the Argonauts. Adults $12 per person; kids $7.
Modulate your ThereminAs part of its Summer Sounds series, the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad is screening three seminal post-rock films in July and August. On Thursday, July 15, Modulations traces the evolution of electronic music. On Thursday, Aug. 5, Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey explores the odd touchless instrument best known for its spooky lead in the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations." On Thursday, Aug. 19, local DJ Daemon Connolly hosts Scratch-a documentary that maps the history of DJing.
