If you count Diversionary Theatre's Scrooge in Rouge, San Diego has three A Christmas Carols on tap now. The latter two, at the North Coast Repertory and Cygnet theaters, are effective, although Cygnet's is by far the more interesting for those in search of the otherworldly. Director Sean Murray's adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic focuses on the ghosts as the agents of Ebenezer Scrooge's epiphany, while North Coast's entry pits Scrooge as his own man, warts and all. Ron Choularton shines as Scrooge in the good North Coast piece, and Cygnet's excellent production marks the official opening of the company's Old Town venue. Both run through Dec. 28, the former at North Coast Repertory Theatre, 987-B Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach. $30. 858-481-1055, www.northcoastrep.org. Cygnet's Old Town venue is at 4040 Twiggs St. in Old Town. $17-$46. 619-337-1525, www.cygnettheatre.com.
