It's almost October, which means glass artist Andy Cohn is right in the middle of her busy pumpkin and ornament season, churning out the Halloween and holiday pieces as quickly as she can.
Yesterday, she got to take a little unexpected breather when actor LeVar Burton showed up. Burton and crew were at Spanish Villages in Balboa Park shooting segments for his upcoming Reading Rainbow iPad app.
"So, I may end up on the app, we'll see," said Cohn, who's been blowing glass for over 30 years.
Cohn said she offered to give Burton a quick course in glass-blowing and he took on the challenge. They made a cup together and Cohn says Burton was a quick study.---
"He did awesome," Cohn said. "He took instruction really, really well. I don't know if that has to do with acting or what."
The app, according to Cohn, is going to be an extension of the Reading Rainbow and, at least for this segment, will focus on showing kids various artistic avenues.
"Basically, they're trying to promote art and let kids know that they don't have to be doctors or lawyers," Cohn said. "They can be an artist and follow their heart."
Burton didn't want his photo taken, but Cohn described the actor as a "super nice person" overall.
