Never has the concept of bad entertainment made for such an entertaining and enduring premise. In The Producers: The New Mel Brooks Musical, downtrodden theatrical producer Max Bialystock and his omega-dog accountant Leo Bloom stumble on what they think will be the perfect scam: raising the money for a "sure-fire" theatrical flop""called "Springtime For Hitler," no less""and then pocketing their investors" money. Needless to say, the two woefully misjudge their ability to not produce. Directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman and starring Lewis J. Stadlen as Bialystock (in the role Nathan Lane made famous on Broadway) and Don Stephenson as Leo Bloom (ditto for Matthew Broderick), The Producers is a safe bet to be Broadway San Diego"s most satisfying marquee hit this season.
