For the first time since local educator Deborah Salzer founded it in 1985, The Playwright's Project will hold its January showcase in a non-Downtown venue. Plays by Young Writers, the project's festival of winning scripts from the California Young Playwrights Contest, will run Jan. 15 to 25 at Cygnet Theatre's Old Town stage, 4040 Twiggs St. in Old Town. Previously, the event had been staged either somewhere on Balboa Park's Old Globe Theatre campus or at The Lyceum stages in Horton Plaza. The Project advocates literacy in San Diego County's schools through theater; the produced plays are culled from the imaginations of kids younger than 19. Famed playwright Edward Albee is The Playwright's Project's artistic advisor. www.playwrightsproject.org.
