Quality Letterpress is more than just a print shop, it's also kind of like a museum. The shop recently moved to a new, larger location at 4599 Mission Gorge Place in Mission Valley, which means they've got more room to show off their old-school printing presses (they've got a press made in 1890 and a type collection that dates back to before the Civil War). See the "store" section of their website for some cool items made with the 1890 press and, if you're interested in learning the craft yourself, click on the "learn" link for dates of upcoming classes. The economy isn't quite as robust as we'd all like it to be, which makes it tough for small retailers like Igloo (640 W. Beech St. in Little Italy). On Friday, Aug. 12, the little art-and-design boutique will host a lineup of local DJs for their official closing party. Stop by during the day or evening and show your support for the store that's introduced us to some cool artists and added style to San Diego over the last fews years. Click here to shop online.
Stone Brewing's resident beer expert, Bill Sysak (aka "Dr. Bill"), is a fascinating guy. At 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens (1999 Citracado Parkway in Escondido), Dr. Bill will host "gypsy" brewers from Stillwater and Evil Twin. Enjoy samples of the beer and let the doc tell you the interesting story behind the name "Evil Twin" and other bits of beer trivia that you likely won't hear anywhere else. We recommend hanging with Dr. Bill for one of his beer dinners, too.
