Downtown's East Village is a growing art district, and there's a small group of arts-minded businesses who have set out to prove it.
The "Last Sundays on the Block" event is the East Village's newmonthly block party featuring art, music and fashion every last Sunday of themonth.
Several businesses and art spaces between Ninth and 10th streets along E Street open their doors whileartists, DJs, face painters and more fill the streets. The event kicked off in June, and this month's block partywill take place Sunday, July 31, from 3 to 8 p.m.
“We are trying to build a walkabout type of deal on ourblock, considering East Village does not have anything like this yet,” saidMichelle Aquino, designer and founder of M. Dot Design, one of the businesses instrumental in producing the event.“Everyone on the block is somewhat of an artist from painters, drawers, music,beauty to fashion.”
FeeLit—equal parts record shop, clothing boutique and artspace—will showcase artwork by Billy Martinez, Sean Griffin, Andrew Bell andAlex Grey. Outside, there will belive art while owner and veteran DJ Markalan spins.
Kleenhouse, an East Village graff-art institution and another one of the businesses that helped create the block party, will feature work by BrianHebets and Sumo1. DJ Kob and DJJunkyard Dog spin music.
Aquino's boutique M. Dot Design, will have a summer clearancesale on hand-sewn clothing and jewelry.
The coordinators say they're still working on expandingthe event throughout the neighborhood.
