A Musical comedian Stephen Lynch was thoroughly engrossed in his first shtick - jacking off two pretend patrons on either side of him-when he poignantly paused, observing that Spreckels looks like a gay porn theatre. The ensuing laughs set the tone for the Sept. 24 night he shared with comedian Mitch Hedberg, where dick and duck jokes were prime for the college crowd and delivery was much more important than punch-lines.
Comedy Central favorite Hedberg began the evening and unceremoniously bombed with a normally foolproof routine. Tours with Dave Attell and Louis Black made his stonerman routine a hit six months ago. Refusing to rely on that old material, however, Hedberg was literally left searching for jokes in a notebook onstage. "If you are reviewing this show, please leave now," was all he could muster.
The fresher Lynch strapped on his acoustic guitar and began with an explosive version of "Baby," dedicated to his imaginary newborn daughter. Sample lyric: "Damn, that's an ugly-ass baby!" He maintained high energy with imitation bits like "The Guy from Smashing Pumpkins Loses His Keys," a shtick about Jesus' brother named "Craig," and a retarded-friend bit called "Special." Lynch's ad-lib talents peaked during "Superhero," as audience members shouted out such favorites as Marijuana Man, Masturbation Boy and George Bush. (Lynch's response: "What is he going to do-mispronounce you to death?")
Even if Lynch wasn't telling crass masturbation jokes, anyone could appreciate his angelic and tuneful warble behind the guitar. But strip away the songwriting talent, exquisite timing and Abercrombie model looks, and what you have is a talented comedian and a star in the making.
