Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 1001 Kettner Blvd., Downtown, 619-234-1001 Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.
The museum's “Thursday Night Thing” has evolved into something of a hipster mainstay. In the past few months, Beck's CD designer and “digital painter” Jeremy Blake has been featured, along with local electronica stars Aspects of Physics. No small amount of über-cool elbow rubbing is part of the appeal of the event, which usually fills up quickly due to a small cover charge ($3 donation suggested) and a cheap bar (beers are $2).
This Thursday should be no different. Roger Ballen: Photographs is the main event, but the sideshow will also be interesting: you can take your own picture at the “Fotoaktion,” using the props provided to create an imaginative self-portrait that may find it's way on to the museum walls. Doris Boris Berman of San Francisco and local artist Perry Vasquez will be running the interactive show.
