Nena Anderson promises at least one "cryin' in your beer" holiday tune on Thursday, Dec. 15, when Bar Pink (3829 30th St. in North Park) hosts a toy drive and fundraiser to benefit Toys for Joy, which collects holiday gifts for underprivileged kids. Anderson—who reminds us of sultry singers like Rickie Lee Jones—backed by The Mules, takes the stage at 10 p.m. The event—which includes a photo booth, silent auction, gourmet cupcakes and a visit from Santa—kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Either a toy or $5 (both of which go to the kiddos) gets you in. Check out the event's Facebook page.
Fans of film will want to head to San Diego State University's Don Powell Theatre at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, for the SDSU Filmmaker Showcase. You never know when the next George Lucas or Stanley Kubrick will emerge (SDSU, after all, was where Destin Cretin, who won a Sundance short film award in 2009, honed his craft). Students' shorts tend to be pretty creative and experimental— and have you seen what the kids are doing with their Canon 7Ds lately? Even iPhone videos are starting to look pretty good.
