WEDNESDAY<br>PLAN A: Tech N9ne, Main Flow @ the Belly Up. Dude's sold nearly a million records since 1999, but the Kansas City MC is still underrated. He's got wild fantasies about diablos as well as ho's, and his gruff, quick-mouthed delivery is fantastic. The partial San Diegan Main Flow is a talent more on the sunny, groove side of hip-hop. MS/techn9ne, MS/mainflow. PLAN B: King Kong, Bunky @ The Casbah. Glad this freak's back. Ethan Buckler-former bassist of '80s band Slint-just dropped King Kong's first album in five years. It's dead-faced, almost spoken-word comedy over minimalist blues-rock. Bunky, with the lovely, elfin vocals of Emily Joyce, is uninhibited fun-rock. MS/kingkong louisville, MS/bunky.
PLAN A: Earthless, The Widows, J Emery Blatchley @ The Casbah. It's the CD-release party for San Diego's never-ending prog/blues/thrash/metal/ indefinable pummeling music aficionados, Earthless. The Widows are becoming an underground favorite-yowly, chaotic garage rock. J Emery Blatchley is the mellow warm-up, a skilled acoustic guitarist sans vocals. MS/earthless, MS/thewidows sandiego, MS/cityoftrees. PLAN B: Ken Andrews, First Wave Hello @ the Belly Up. If you liked Failure or On (remember "Soluble Words"?), you'll dig Andrews' solo stuff, backed by San Diego electro-rock band First Wave Hello. MS/kenandrews, MS/firstwavehello. PLAN C: Screamin' Yeehaws, Toothless George @ Scolari's Office. Screamin' Yeehaws are barn-burning punks whose vocalist has a 2,000-grit larynx. Toothless George is a one-man band-guitar, kick drums and country-blues rock. MS/thescreaminyeehaws, MS/toothlessgeorgeamphisonemandband.
PLAN A: Rory Block, Kelly Joe Phelps @ Acoustic Music San Diego. You wouldn't expect old-school country blues from this petite, motherly white woman. But believe it. Four-time W.C. Handy winner Block is all creaky, wailing soul and one of the best blues guitarists (regardless of gender). Portland's Kelly Joe Phelps could co-headline-a folk-bluesman raised on Delta sweat and free jazz. www.rory block.com, www.kellyjoephelps.net. PLAN B: Patrick Wolf, Dynamite Walls @ Beauty Bar. Ireland's avant-garde pop boy Patrick Wolf created his own junk orchestra by the time you got your first pubic hair. Like Nick Cave, if Cave played a violin and obsessed over machinery. Dynamite Walls are like Reeve Oliver or Switchfoot-a mainstream San Diego rock band with huge, indelible hooks. MS/offi cialpatrickwolf, MS/thesedynamitewalls. PLAN C: The Be Good Tanyas, Sean Hayes @ the Belly Up. Ideally, Wilson Phillips' buttery harmonies would've been as rootsy and authentic as the Tanyas'. San Francisco's Sean Hayes is an old-time music phenom and perennial opening act who's stolen many a show. MS/thebegoodtanyas, MS/rattlesnakecharm.
PLAN A: They Might Be Giants, Let's Go Sailing, Anya Marina @ the Belly Up. Whether you want to find out if Triangle Man's still kicking the crap out of Particle Man or hear tracks from the new Dust Brothers-produced album, The Else, TMBG are still talented nerds after 25 years. L.A.'s Let's Go Sailing is good female-fronted piano-pop and the show opens with San Diego's Anya Marina-a cute, fairylike songbird who will cut you with a single lyric. MS/theymightbegiants, MS/letsgosailing, MS/anyamarina. PLAN B: The Silent Comedy @ The Casbah. One of San Diego's best-part earnest folk band, part Charlie Chaplin-esque carnival troupe and all parts violin-fired goodness. MS/the silentcomedy. PLAN C: Mickey Avalon @ Epicentre. The Alice Cooper-looking Jewish rapper turned his street urchin life into a surprisingly good, seedy rap project, with songs about Jane Fonda, his dick and other weighty matters. MS/mickeyavalon.
PLAN A: El-P @ the Belly Up. This NYC fire-crotch formed Company Flow when he was 18, signed to Rawkus Records a few years later, then created his own hip-hop record label-cum-empire called Definitive Jux. In other words, a total slacker-but does this hip-hop thing pretty well. MS/elproducto. PLAN B: Melt Banana @ The Casbah. If you can imagine Puffy Amiyumi fronting Mr. Bungle, you might understand why Tokyo has a love-fear relationship with their native noise-rockers. MS/meltbanana band. PLAN C: The Coyote Problem @ Dizzy's. It's the CD-release party for one of San Diego's better alt-country-esque-ish-like bands, led by Peter Bolland. thecoyoteproblem.com.
PLAN A: Pop Levi @ The Casbah. With a Spinal Tap bowl cut (he's a former hair model) and glam chops that would've bedazzled Syd Barrett, Liverpool's Pop Levi seems like he fell out of A Clockwork Orange, landed on stage and just went for it. Cheeky, drug-eyed fun. MS/poplevi. PLAN B: The Sea & Cake, Robbers on High Street, The Zincs @ the Belly Up. Must be indie-rock night at the Belly Up! For The Sea and Cake, check our feature on this page. Robbers on High Street were robbed of their rightful chart position with the really, really good 2005 album, Tree City. Hopefully the new one, Grand Animals, corrects that. Chicago's The Zincs are stately behind the deep-voiced Jim Elkington, a 2007 Leonard Cohen. MS/seaand cake, MS/robbersonhighstreet, MS/thezincs.
PLAN A: Brother Ali, Psalm One @ the Belly Up. It's the white-rapper-show week in San Diego! But Minneapolis' Brother Ali is no reality schmuck. The throaty MC and his DJ, BK One, rip off a slew of tough, good-time joints on their new album, The Undisputed Truth. He's like the ivory to Ice Cube's ebony. Psalm One has been spitting sexual come-ons for a couple years, and now she's emerging as the Windy City's rhyme queen. MS/brotherali, MS/psalmone. PLAN B: The Clientele, Electric Soft Parade @ The Casbah. If you're pasty, like to read and pretend to enjoy tea with milk, The Clientele and Electric Soft Parade are two of Britain's best tweedy tender hearts. MS/theclienteleofficial, MS/electricsoftparade. PLAN C: Albert Hammond Jr. @ House of Blues. It won't make you forget his other band, but the debut by The Strokes' guitarist is pleasant and tuneful. MS/alberthammondjr.
