In this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, the Time Lord from Gallifrey travels back to wartime Britain, then opens a worm hole to a distant planet in the future where Christmas trees are the dominant life form. Then, once he's saved the day, he's back in 2011 in time for dinner with his two companions, Rory and Amy.
The Doctor, the protagonist of the long-running BBC series, is best known for those kind of time-bending adventures, especially in the most recent series by Steven Moffat, where it's not unusual for the Doctor to make a mistake in a calculation and accidentally leave a friend by the side of the road for years.
What does this have to do with San Diego politics? Well...
Today I sent City Councilmember Carl DeMaio's chief of staff, Felipe Monroig, an email reminding him that the office is hitting its 10-day deadline for responding to a public-records request. Here's the automatic email response I received:

I will be out of the office until July 26th, 2010. Please contact Tom Aaron at (619) 236-6655 for assistance during my absence.
It appears that, for his holiday vacation, Monroig is taking his family on a jaunt through the time vortex, with plans to re-enter municipal government last summer.
What was so special about July 26, 2010, that Monroig would be willing to bend the fabric of the universe to get there? Nothing, really, according to DeMaio's schedule. A press conference on a proposed sales-tax increase. DeMaio gave an interview to Liam Dillon of voiceofsandiego.org. City Council was on recess.
Whatever the case, Tom Aaron's not going to be of much help to me. He left DeMaio's office in February 2011.
So, what else does Monroig have in common with the Doctor?
Well, like the T.A.R.D.I.S., DeMaio's head is much bigger on the inside.
