Some poor bartender gets pelted in the face with a glass. Another tries to explain to some knowit-all that it's just not possible to make a “frozen margarita with no ice.” A third bartender listens to a woman recount a drunken encounter with a guy who puked on her during sex, only to find out later that the puker was actually the bartender's own roommate.
That's just a small sampling of the sordid stories that make up HookItUpBro.com, a local website devoted to the annoyances that come with working in San Diego's nightlife industry.
“The best part of my night is after everybody's gone and the staff is just sitting around, bullshitting and telling stories,” says Matt “Boomer” Dunn, a local barkeep at a “big spot in Downtown” who started the site with his friend Leif “LT” Tomas as a forum for the nightlife industry to sound off.
But the site isn't just funny to nightlife employees. Anyone who's ever stepped foot in a bar and encountered some drunken jackass can relate. The name originated from when an unruly customer asked Dunn to “hook it up, bro”—in other words: “Give me free drinks.”
“Nothing shocks me at this point,” Dunn says. “You don't go into some other guy's job and say, ‘Hey, man, give me something for free.'”
Dunn says he's been “overwhelmed by the positivity” from his nightlife peers. Anybody with a story is welcome to contribute, and Dunn is working on a feature that will allow contributors to text stories to the site while still on the job. The establishment's name is left out and the customers' names are never used, because Dunn says he doesn't want to scare off potential customers or get employees in trouble. Still, he can't help but hope that some of the subjects ridiculed on the site see what's being posted:
“If with this website I can stop one person from going to a bar and telling the bartender to ‘Hook it up, bro,' then I feel like I've done my part.”
