Unable to properly acclimate to the recent winter chill? Your only option is to dance your ass off. As such, this week's guide:
The most humid of dance refuges will be at Modus Supper Club (2202 Fourth Ave.) on Jan. 18 for the kick-off of Dos Tres, a new weekly event hosted by a collective of local DJs known as L.A.M.B. For the premiere night, the L.A.M.B. boys have invited Claude VonStroke, one of the more innovative new DJs in the minimal/tech/house scene. With four recent appearances on the uber-hip Fabric series of DJ mixes under his belt, VonStroke will be spinning his signature blend of sexy synth and funky, massive bass that will transform Modus into a burning frenzy of electro-loving robots.
The ladies in San Diego's grrrl scene host She's a Rock Star at Martini Ranch in the Gaslamp on Jan. 19 with the seductive electro-house of DJ J'me J, DJ Kiss and headlining DJs Kimberly S. and Talonya. With fashions on display from G-Star Raw Denim and Pure Boutique, you'll feel like the hottest new cast member on The L-Word.
Jan. 26 marks the return of 3 The Hard Way, a monthly event at Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd.) put on by RE:UP magazine. The focus is on solid breaks for what resident DJ Eddie Turbo defines as a "non-alienating dance party." Joining other "3THW" residents Atom Matter and Jon Wesley this month will be L.A.'s crunchy, jazzy, hip-hop producer, Presto. Widely known for his work on Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz series, Presto's organic, soulful hip-hop beats will bring an early end to our San Diego winter.--Justin Roberts
