If you search for albums tagged "San Diego" on Bandcamp, you'll find some interesting stuff. In this semi-regular report, we sift through recent postings and relay our findings.
Awake in My Dream , Anthony Colon: On the cover art for Awake in My Dream , Anthony Colon is decked out in a white tuxedo jacket, sitting on a couch made of leather, surrounded by lit candles. The man looks smooth, and as an emcee he's got some talents, for sure, but it's really the album's production, steeped in eerie, synth-heavy cloud beats, that ultimately sells me on this.
S/T , Basta Basta: Basta Basta's distorted synth-punk seems pretty fun and fizzy for the first minute or so, until it turns into a Crystal Castles-style distorted shout-along featuring politically charged smash-the-system lyrics. Not that it stops being fun and fizzy, but in message and aesthetic, it grows dramatically more abrasive. Basta Basta fight the power with danceable beats.
vibesetters., MelloSteeze: An artist called MelloSteeze, releasing an album titled vibesetters., tells you pretty much exactly what you need to know in the name and title. This is chill-out music, for breezy afternoons, balmy evenings—whatever. Only laid back beats for takin' it easy.
Kittyflipping , Kittyflipping: One of the tags on this album's Bandcamp page is "cocaine." Not sure if that's the drug they were on when making the album, or what it's supposed to emulate, but Kittyflipping is a hell of a drug. They're loud, they're fast, they're noisy and exploding with energy. This is a fun record, but I'd hate to know what the comedown feels like.
GEMSHOP , Mywka: It's always worth spending some time on Bandcamp, streaming random, unexpected things, because you never know when you're going to stumble across something really interesting. Mywka is just that interesting thing, an electronic music project that balances the spastic rhythms of IDM, the beat-less atmosphere of ambient and the abrasive noise of industrial. And to some degree, thereís a little pop in there as well. This is an EP where you don't always totally know what's going on, but it's absolutely never boring.
