Author and Punisher
This month, SXSW launches again, with two weeks of film, technology, music and debauchery in downtown Austin. It's always fun, no matter who's playing (and exhausting, so plan on sleeping a lot beforehand), but this year several of San Diego's heavyweights are playing the festival. Here's who you'll catch in Austin this year.
Author and Punisher (March 19, Swan Dive Patio): One man industrial metal powerhouse Tristan Shone has been pretty much everywhere in the last year, recently embarking on an extensive European tour before returning to the states. If you want something heavy, dark and intense, you need to go see him.
Little Hurricane (March 15, Maggie Mae's): Little Hurricane are vets when it comes to playing SXSW, and it's easy to see why. Every time the rock 'n' roll duo plays in town, the show sells out pretty fast, so it's not hard to imagine their bluesy style translating to the character of the city.
Mrs. Magician (March 18, BD Rileyís): Mrs. Magician is releasing a new album again after a period of relative quiet, and that seems like the perfect opportunity to return to Austin to help promote it. This show is part of a longer series of tour dates planned, in addition to their appearance at the Drive Like Jehu-curated All Tomorrow's Parties in Wales in April.
Prayers (March 16, Trinity Hall): Prayers are blowing up like crazy, so it only makes sense that they'd make a return to SXSW this year, where their "cholo-goth" sound is likely to be met with a big crowd. Just a month later, they're playing Coachella, just to give you some indication as to the size of their hype train.
The Touchies (March 18, Grackle): Local punks The Touchies are making the trek out to Austin to play a special all-day show, headlined by Japanese band Peelander-Z. It's also an all ages show, so if you've got some friends just under the legal drinking limit, they can hang out here.
The Young Wild (March 17, Esther's Follies): The Young Wild are making their first appearance at SXSW this year, and they're making quite a go of it, hitting up an official showcase in addition to several day parties. On March 18, they're even playing a Guacamole Showdown, so come hungry for that.
