Whiskey Girl, Wang's and weirdoes
First, a little nightlife news: Whiskey Girl is moving. The owners have signed a new lease on a bigger location a block away at 702 Fifth Ave., Downtown. Trattoria La Strada, the restaurant currently located in the 8,500 square-foot building at 702 Fifth Ave., is scheduled to close at the end of the month. Whiskey Girl will throw a New Year's Eve party in its old digs, and then re-open in the new spot at the end of January. The Verant Group (True North, Offshore tavern, etc.) will operate a new restaurant and bar called Barley Mash in the old Whiskey Girl location, slated to open in March.
Wang's North Park (3029 University Ave.) held a hiring event last week. The restaurant and bar is scheduled to open quietly on Monday, Nov. 21 with a bigger grand opening in the future.
Now, on to some nightlife happenings you should consider adding to your dance card:
Makeout Weird @ Whistle Stop Bar: “Weird” indeed describes this free, experimental event that happens every third Thursday of the month. Subcultural art, visuals, live music and DJs come together through the efforts of Heather Brosché and Bobby Bray. On tap this month are performances by Sean Francis Conway and Pal&Drome (the new electro two-piece by former Scarlet Symphony members Josh and Zach Wheeler), DJ sets by Brosché (aka Mnstrpsy) and Bray (aka Freak Sauce), art by Jfre Robot Coad and others and jewelry by Found Pieces and Arron Morrison.
El Make it Funky @ El Take it Easy: Local hip-hop crew Fam Royal is hosting a new Friday night at the North Park eatery and bar. DJs J.Blow and Existence76 play funk, soul, R&B and hip-hop, and there'll be drink specials all night (try one of the specialty cocktails made with mescal).
Drink ‘n Draw @ Air Conditioned Lounge: There's a new, costumed figure-drawing night in town, and it's happening every Sunday at 9 p.m. Live models dressed up as clowns and such, and $5 you-call-its provide the perfect muse. $5.
