If you haven't figured it out yet, the holiday season is a total drag. Do yourself a favor and avoid annoying "Ironic Christmas Sweater" parties. Instead, shake your ass at one of these soirées.
On Dec. 22, shock your senses at San Diego Sports Club's "Switch Electro" (1271 University Ave.) as DJs Xorge Bex, Dr. Indulgent, Monchis and Haruki spin their glitchy electronic goodness and the models of Six-19 show off some high-voltage fashions. No doubt, the dance floor will be buzzing with the likes of Hot Chip, MSTRKRFT, In Flagranti and Kraftwerk. On Dec. 24, Air Conditioned Lounge (4673 30th St.) is hosting a "Nightmare Before Christmas" dance party featuring self-proclaimed "disco punk" Junior and DJs Girth, JCee and Scotty Rob, who throw down their blend of electro, new wave and '80s booty-shakers that'll make you sweat so much that Santa will find your apartment on smell alone.
Next we have New Year's Eve, when many San Diegans feel inclined to spend a gazillion dollars on some lame event where a dress code is enforced and the crowd is more pretentious than the cast of America's Next Top Model.
No, thank you.
The real New Year's parties will be taking place at the Beauty Bar and Kava Lounge, both of which will host some of San Diego's hottest acts with cover charges that don't require installment plans. Beauty Bar (4746 El Cajon Blvd.) hosts bluesy garage trio Grand Ole Party and alt-rockers Republic of Letters and will treat patrons to a $20 all-you-can-drink bar until 11 p.m. and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight. Or, for a measly 10 bucks, you can join the best "machine funk" party on the face of the planet-seriously-at Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd.) when the Get Ugly DJs, Dr. Indulgent and Alex Villalobos, celebrate the first anniversary of their "ugliness." Prepare for yet more zealous perspiration-these guys live up to their name.
