Goes well with: Chris Cornell, Neil Young, flutes
There's still a bit of magic tucked beneath that heap of rotting flannel. Yielding a more intelligent and experimental design than their grunge forefathers-sheeit, there's even a flute involved-San Diego's Blackout Party brings the same moody blues-rock that had Alice all up in her Chains.
Vocalist Brian Holwerda does most of the haunting with a voice that cat-calls Chris Cornell out of pop-chart oblivion, wailing and pleading through the lo-fi plod of "She Makes My Blood Boil." With help from former FenixTX drummer Damon De La Paz and multi-instrumentalists Andrew Heine and Tim Lowman, the band looks and sounds refreshingly informal. The quasi-hippie waves of flute on "The Marauder" could've been bad like Jethro Tull, but the dusty guitar and drums help Ron Burgundy's instrument of choice avoid any potential suckiness.
Yeah, they'll definitely be the butt of a few new-age O.B. jokes, but The Blackout Party's casual nature comes across-in the music, in their quirky photos, even in their show fliers. A bong rip helps appreciation, but it's not required.
