Former District 2 City Council candidate Lorena Gonzalez will not challenge recently elected City Councilmember Kevin Faulconer in the upcoming June primary. Gonzalez lost to Faulconer in the special January election by a scant 724 votes.
In a letter to supporters, Gonzalez cited a previous campaign promise not to immediately run again if she lost. "I believe in keeping my word," she wrote "As a mother of two young children, I think it is vital to teach values by example."
Gonzalez told CityBeat she made the promise because she believes District 2 is in desperate need of stable representation but says her decision "is in no way an endorsement of Faulconer." She said she's willing to help a quality candidate challenge him.
