2nd Place: Where's Your Morals
With Lindbergh Field's fate in the balance, the stack of resumes on Mayor Dick Murphy's desk is growing, the applicants vying for one of three $139,000-per-year jobs with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. It's Murphy's task to appoint one person to the airport authority's three-member executive board. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender and Gov. Gray Davis are also charged with appointing one member each.
Come Dec. 3, the Airport Authority will assume control of the operation and expansion or potential relocation of Lindbergh Field. Public opinion about the board runs the gamut from supporters who praise its inception as a chance to solve the city's airport riddle, to opponents crying that it is simply a pasture for termed out politicians.
Officially, here is a list and basic background information on some of the current candidates.
Steve Alexande is an investment advisory representative and general securities representative for W.S. Griffith Securities, a San Diego-based investment firm. Paul Benton formerly served as the director of community development for the city of Imperial Beach.
Michael Cardenas is founder and president of Multilingual Translations Inc, a full-range, multi-language communications service, specializing in the high-tech sector. Cardenas also holds a law degree.
Ronald Carrico is a columnist for the San Diego Daily Transcript and a lawyer who has fought ardently against the Padres stadium project. James Frost is a senior bridge engineer for Simon Wong Engineering, a San Diego-based design firm. Leo Leonard is a former pilot for Pacific Southwest Airlines.
Daniel Sullivan serves as executive vice president of human resources for Qualcomm. Sullivan holds a Ph.D. in organizational communications from the University of Nebraska. Paul Thomas serves on the Senior Affairs Advisory Board for the city of San Diego and is the former president of the College Area Community Council. Gernot Trolf serves as vice president and chief operating officer for the Seashore Investment Company.
Michael Vandenbergh is the former director of properties and facilities for the Port of San Diego. Howard Wayne, who wrote the Airport Authority legislation, currently represents the 78th Assembly District but is being termed out. Wayne is the chair of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on Biotechnology. In his free time, he's also a member of the Assembly Committees on Health, Housing and Community Development, Judiciary and Water, Parks and Wildlife.
Byron Wear is the two-term city councilmember representing District 2.Wear serves co-chair of the committee on Government Efficiency and Fiscal Reform and is chair of the Land Use and Housing Committee. Wear currently sits on the interim board of the Regional Airport Authority.
