"I oughta come down on you like the sword of God," was one of Kirk Douglas' most memorable line deliveries in an underrated career of epic swagger and gritty wit. In a genre that has been collated and copied in a million mutated forms, Douglas' 1951 film portrayal of Jim McLeod broke the mold for every hard-boiled, tortured detective in every hard-boiled detective story that followed. And many have followed. Still, Detective Story-especially the play by Sydney Kingsley-endures despite its overused template (Seriously, if aliens researched us by watching our movies or TV shows, they'd have to think the average American is a middle-aged white male detective from New York).
The Lamb's Players production, which mines some of San Diego's most talented thespians, lives up to the work's formidable legacy. Starring David Cochran Heath as the hard-nosed yet righteous McLeod, and directed by Robert Smyth, Detective Story is top-notch drama and a local theater scene showcase, to boot.
