Ocean Beach is a brilliant place to help get you in the mood for summer; it's casual, funky and colorful. I find shopping amid salty ocean breezes and hazy, early-summer sunshine to be the perfect antidote for June gloom.

Digable weinersOh my god! It’s a sausage fest! And beer! Sausage and beer! It’s a sausage-and-beer fest! From 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, Jsix restaurant will host San Diego’s annual Sausage Fest at LOUNGEsix, the rooftop terrace atop Hotel Solamar (616 J St., Downtown). Ten chefs—from Carnitas Snack Shack, Cowboy Star, Whisknladle, Burlap, Urban Solace, Saltbox, Europa Sausage, The Linkery, Jsix and last year’s winner, Coronado Brewing Company—will present sausages made from their own recipes, and attendees will choose the champion wiener. Lost Abbey brewing company will also be on hand to unveil a new German lager, dubbed The Road to Helles. The Tighten Ups will provide the live soundtrack. For $10, you get tastes of all the sausages, and, if you like, you can take home a 1-liter stein full of The Road to Helles for $20. If you want to go all-out, you can rent a cabana, which comes with a private sausage server. ...

But that wasn't the reason I devoted an afternoon the other day to a 2 p.m. performance of Fiddler on the Roof in Coronado. The production, directed by Robert Smyth and Deborah Gilmour Smyth is proving so popular that it's already been extended all the way to July 28. That's a long run. ...
