Since moving to San Diego two and a half years ago, I've lived in three apartments-in University Heights, Mission Hills and Hillcrest. But since they've all been in the same general uptown area, that's the part of town I've come to know, plus Mission Valley (where I work) and Downtown (where work often takes me).
So when staff writer Dan Strumpf suggested we approach this year's Best of San Diego issue neighborhood by neighborhood, I thought it was a great idea-our writers would come up with the best places for me to eat, drink, shop, explore and relax in communities like Ocean Beach, Kearny Mesa, Barrio Logan, City Heights and Southeast San Diego.
They do the work-and I benefit. Sweet!
Oh, and hopefully you'll find it useful, too.
We couldn't cover the whole county, so please be advised that we didn't get to lots of places-Chula Vista, National City, San Ysidro, La Mesa, El Cajon, etc.-but we were able to scour the city limits of San Diego, plus the East County backcountry and Julian, the North County coast and some inland areas, Coronado and Imperial Beach.
We've grouped the neighborhoods in general themes (The City, The Beaches, The Burbs and The Outlands), and some of the results are admittedly strange-is La Jolla really an “outland”?-so I ask you not to take it too literally.
I've already gleaned some new ideas for ways to spend my free time (Free time? Ha!). I hope it helps you, too.
