These days, a home office is a necessity, if only for the office-in-the-home tax write-off. And there's no shortage of places to go when you're ready to trick out your spare room. But if you're an office-supply geek, it's worth your time to check out Hillcrest Stationers, an independent, family-owned shop that's been in the same location since 1949.
Terry Hastings, who owns the place with wife Susan, says Hillcrest Stationers has survived in the era of big-box office supply stores for a several reasons, chief being the 'location we're in. Or, not being where the big boxes want to be.' In fact, the neighborhood itself continues to do the store right-Hastings says many of his customers are within walking distance, describing Hillcrest as a 'more community-oriented place. The community often buys from within.'
Being independent also means that Hillcrest Stationers (3804 Fourth Ave.) is actually able to carry a larger selection of, well, everything, from paper to pens, binders to toner, to those cool reporter's notebooks I can't seem to find anywhere else. And the Hastings both know their stuff-the shop's been in their family since the '60s. It's the perfect place to get your office party started.
