For those of you who think you've got the power to gorge and are daring enough to take that calorie-filled journey, here are a few joints that will aid you in testing the limits of your belly—and possibly your dignity.
“Broken Yolk Special” at Broken Yolk Café. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, the “Broken Yolk Special” at this San Diego institution—which has locations in the Gaslamp Quarter, Pacific Beach, Eastlake, San Marcos and Carlsbad—packs enough meal for a fortnight. The challenge is a 12-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions and American cheese and covered in chili and even more cheese. Sounds easy, you say? Not so fast, hungry, hungry hippos. It also comes with a half pan of home fries and two buttery biscuits. Better stab an extra hole in your belt for this one. Those who complete the challenge get their brekkie on the house, and their name permanently added to the Hall of Fame Plaque. thebrokenyolkcafe.com
“Da Ultimate Burga Challenge” at Nicky Rottens Bar & Burger Joint. Fuhgedaboutit! This Gaslamp joint celebrates all that is Guido with over-the-top Jersey slang all over the menu and photos of mobsters all over the friggin' walls. They go big with their theme and don't skimp on size with “Da Ultimate Burga Challenge.” Guidos and Guidettes fork over $19.95 and get one hour to finish a 2.5-pound burger loaded with Brandt beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and the special “Rotten sauce” piled between two super-sized buns. Challengers can fist-pump while they gorge all they want, but there is a very strict “No upchuck rule.” No getting up or you're whacked out of the competition. Those who down the whole damn thing get their name, city and state engraved in a plaque, a T-shirt and a gut like Tony Soprano. 560 Fifth Ave., Downtown, nickyrottens.com
“The Trough” at Bull's Smokin' BBQ. Some little piggies go to market, other little piggies just dive head first into a pile of meat. For those with the need to overfeed on some good ol' southern grub, this Linda Vista barbecue spot has “The Trough” challenge. It includes eight smoked pork ribs, six smoked beef ribs, half a smoked chicken, two sides of your choosing and four slices of corn bread for $49.95. That's a lot of meat! If you finish the entire meal, your arteries might be begging for mercy, but your ego will get a huge boost from seeing your name on the Wall of Fame. And if that ridiculous amount of meat wasn't enough, you also get a $25 gift card. 1127 W. Morena Blvd., Linda Vista, bullssmokinbbq.com
Lucha Libre Taco Shop's Hot Dog Challenge. At this Mission Hills Mexican hot spot, you can unleash your inner Kobayashi and attempt to power through a hot dog-eating challenge. Those who attempt the feat have 15 minutes to eat as many TJ-style hot dogs, wrapped in bacon and covered in onion, mayo, ketchup and mustard, as their stomachs can hold. The current record holder is world-famous professional-eating champion Joey Chestnut, who put down 30 TJ dogs last year. People have been hesitant to try the challenge since Chestnut set the record. But maybe, just maybe, if you put on one of the Lucha Libre fighter masks on hand before eating, you might gain the inner strength needed to win. This challenge is $15. 1810 W.
