San Diego's club scene gives birth this month to two brand-spanking-new parties brought to us by very familiar names. First up is Pop Noir, an 18-and-up dance night starting March 30 at Static Lounge (634 Broadway), with plenty of booze available for the 21-plus crowd. The organizers of this "barely legal" event-May*Star (of Fashion Whore fame) and Daygnar-are welcoming local DJs Sleazy V from Powder Room and Patrick Heaney and Mike Delgado from Shark Attack, along with Los Angeles DJs Keith 2.0 and (N), for a fashion-forward night of indie, electro, '80s, Brit-pop and more. Watch for the flood of pop tarts making their way to Pop Noir from House of Blues shortly after midnight-it's a perfect unofficial Lily Allen after-party.
If that's not your scene, then get your weekly Tijuana fix at Tia Juana Tilly's (701 Ave. Revolución) for a set by Damian Lazarus, owner of U.K. label Crosstown Rebels and the man behind compilation albums like Rebel Futurism and Suck My Deck. Lazarus will be spinning a deep and dirty electro set on March 30 for Tijuana's robot masses.
The hands of old-school San Diego party rocker Adam Gimbel are dripping with mashup. He's been busy piecing together the second of this month's club newborns, M*A*S*H UP Unit 619, which premieres on April 7 at San Diego Sports Club (1271 University Ave.). Ever since DJ Danger Mouse stitched together The Beatles' White Album with Jay Z's Black Album, mashup parties have been burning up clubs in San Francisco and L.A. The idea's proven to have remarkably strong legs, thanks to the endless possible combinations of songs and artists (Timberlake with Siouxsie & the Banshees, anyone?) and Gimbel looks to make a little mashup mecca here in San Diego. DJs Riko, Kallao (from 91X), Huff N Puff and Kipper are this night's designated "mashup masters" alongside Gimbel's own mashup band Cover Me Badd's Blasphemous Guitars. For now, M*A*S*H UP Unit 619 is slated to happen once every four months, but something tells me this city's demand for mashup won't easily be satiated by that slim schedule.
